Final Community Service Self-Reflection

          1-First of all my volunteer was in Future Center in Musaffah. They teach students who have a disability or a physical problems to let them know how to contact with other people and they teach them how to respect. The ages was from 5 to 21 years old and the volunteering was very good so i enjoyed it and i advice anyone how have to volunteer to go there because its wonderful place to volunteer and they teach you everything like how to treat the students there. The volunteer wasn't so hard actually it was very easy and the students can understand you when you get used of it.

          2-The best part was when i teach a student called shezin how to type in the computer at the beginning he couldn't find the letters in the key bored so i did a table and write the letters in it from A to Z then i ask him to type the letters 10 times for each. After a week i took him to the computer lab to type a paragraph and he did very well so he improved very fast and he can now write a big paragraph alone without helping. I feel so happy that i reached a goal that i let him know how to type.

          4-The teachers in Future Center teach me how to help the students and how to make them do their job so i learned many things like to be patient and wait for them to finish their job for example like wait for them to think because they can't think or act like the normal people they are little bit slower than them. Also i learned to never treat them different than the normal children because they are smart and they will feel bad for that. So as i said i will take the patient and the respect to other people.

Future Center

I did an interview with one of the teachers who works in future center and thats what she told me about:

1 - For how many years you have been working with special needs kids ?

For 5 years she was in other special needs school before 2 years she came into future center. 

2 - Is working with special needs kids a hard job ? What are the hardest cases?
she said its hard for the new teacher who never teaches a  special needs student in her life but, its so easy in my opinion i am happy to work with them. i don't think that there is any hard cases.

3 - Why did you choose working with special needs kids ?
because i had a friend who have a kid with special needs i felt sad for him so i think that if i can help them even if i work hard but i liked this job and i like to help special needs people.

4 - What are the best feeling you had as an special needs teacher ?
when my students improve in the things which i teaches like writing and reading and also typing.

5 - how can we as a college students help them ?

teach them who to read and write also treat them like the normal kids or normal people .. make them feel happy .. teach them how to respect other people and even how to be smart.

Future Center Volunteering

     In my first day of volunteering in future center when i went to the class they where eating at 10:30 then every single person clean their table and chair after they finish eating the breakfast and every day one of the student should wash the dishes and another student take the dishes to the table. After that they play different games like puzzles and matching the pictures then they study English letters and spelling. After that they play in the computer ABCD games for example they listen to the sound and spelling the letters also they press the letters in the key bored. The students ages were from 8 to 13 years old but some of them where very smart like they can easy read and write. 

    After that I took them to the computer lab to write the letters a b c d and some of them write a paragraph it contain 150 to 200 they are young but some of them are very smart on this things also they act like adult people. then I came into the class then I found them playing like usual but they play new games always I helped one of them he's name is Karim the game was they should stick a paper to the balloon with using glue for doing that so I enjoyed that and I am very happy to help them .

    After we finish sticking the paper to the balloon we cut new papers for the next time When we will stick the paper again to the balloon.

    Today as always they were eating and cleaning the table and chair. Then I help some one called Mohamed to read the short story he is reading well then I helped shezin to complete the puzzle it was big but he complete it that was good then I helped aaqli to also complete the puzzle but it was four puzzles together. After they finish they take small papers and try to make it like smal balls by rolling the paper then they learned in the computer the moniter and the cpu and the keybored and mouse.

    The last day in future center was wonderful there were many people came to volunteer in this day we did a nice job by helping the student to color this picture so it was good i really enjoyed it even the students was happy when they color the drawing .

    At the end i really love this volunteer and i hope every person have a disability get well soon and the normal person how don't like this life or always say its boring or something like that to say thanks for god because the normal person have something the  person how have disability wish to have it and they maybe will have it in the future or maybe not so god thank you for everything thats all.

1.   The Main goal(s) / purpose of the organization?

-Primary goal

The main goal of this organization is to equip individulas with disabilities the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to realize their full potential, in a safe, secure, and stimulating environment, in order for them to lead fulfilling lives.

-Secondary goal

To increase public awareness of disabilities and to empower the various stakeholders with appropriate knowledge and skills in dealing with people with disabilities.

         

2.   The History of the organization? 

The Centre was set up in September 2000 with sixty students. Since then, the student population has multiplied, with one hundred sixty students in the current academic year 2011-2012.   Its multnational team of specialists consists of special education teachers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologist and members of the administration staff. 

Achievements

The Future Centre For Special Needs is Winner Of 2009-2010 Khalifa Award for Education In The Special Needs Category.

An Accredited Site For the Competent Learner Model (CLM) Awarded By The Tucci Learning Solutions, U.S.A.

Its Rehabilitation Department is HAAD certified

2011 Award For Outstanding Director - Princess Haya Award For Special Education.

2012 Short listed For Outstanding Special Needs Center - Princess Haya For Special Education.    

3.   Organization – Where is the headquarters? Who is CEO?         

There’s only one centre in Abudhabi, the CEO’s name is Abdul Jalil Al Fahim, and there is a Honorary President for the centre and he is HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

4.   Areas/ countries active? 

The future Centre is active in the local field, in abudhabi, but they take the students for trips out side the country, we hope that one day they open a new centre In every Emarah and may it goes outside the UAE, so we will spread the knowledge world wide.   

                                          

5.   Target recipients? 

We are going to help students who have some disabilities, such as, Mental retardation, physical disability, Down syndrome, speaking and hearing problem, and many other disabilities. And in this centre you will find students with different ages from 2 years to 30 years or more, depends on the students disabilities.

6.   Benefits/ resources provided?  Short term vs. long term? 

As we know they’re people just like us, but what do you think they need ? they need to be treated with respect and to be educated, there are many disabilities in the centre for example we have the blind people who can’t see and we have the people who have some difficulty with walking so they need a physical help from us to train them about walking. And there are the children and old people who have a mental problem and they need a special treatment and we should train our self first to get involve with them, and next in the research we are going to talk about how we are going to help them 

7.   General profile of a volunteer – Who would/should get involved?

Everyone could volunteer but you should have patient and you know how to deal with the students, and how not to hurt their feelings. You can volunteer by entering the website and apply to volunteer, or you can contact with them by email and they will be more then happy to help you volunteering. How could you help them ? everyone of them have a special needs so the students with physical need we can encourage him to do his best and to counties with him to the end until he will exceed on his disabilities. The blind student we can teach him some technics that will help him to depends on his other senses to move on with his life and to a normal life as much as possible, the students with mental needs we should be patient with them because they have a disabilities that make there life hard, we should stay with them to make it easier. The students need some fun, so we are going to play some football maybe or to have some activities together so they can release the stress. Helping the students will help me too, it will made me satisfied about myself  and happy because I tried my best to make someone’s life easier and made them happy

1.Does every human being have the rights to reach the top of the Maslow pyramid?

- Yes, every human being have the right to reach the top of the pyramid, but in my opinion the everyone should have a chance to develop his skills, everyone should work hard to get better things in your life and to have confidence about their self. 
2.Does every human being have the capability of reaching that level?

- No I don’t think that everyone have the capability to reach the high level, maybe in their hearts but not in real life, because some people got a physical obstruction that makes them sad and depressed about them self, but the others take their physical obstruction as a motivation to move on with their lives, and I have a great example he’s Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest physicists and he have an obstruction, so reaching the high level of the pyramid depends on your situation, and try your best to beat it by working hard and reach the high level.
3.What are the opportunities are needed to get to the higher level?

- The person who wants to get to the higher level should have determination that makes him want to achieve his life and do what he always wanted to do, because by having a determination the human being can get to the higher level. And he need to stop listing to other people who keep saying to him that you can’t do it, on the other hand, he should take advices from people who knew what to do to make it to the higher level. Its all about believing in yourself and in your abilities to do something you want.
4.What are the obstacles could stand in the way of reaching these levels?

- When you’re going with your life and trying to make your living better by trying to reach the higher level of the pyramid you’ll face many obstacles such as that there are many people won’t appreciate what you’re doing and will make you down, but you should fight to approve yourself in your field, and in many countries there’s a kind of isms like: racism, sexism and many other, but the people should stand for their rights because every human being should have an equal opportunity to prove himself and should have a chance to get a higher level.
5.What could you do to help others to reach the higher levels?

- The simplest thing that I can do is giving them advise about life and how to achieve your goal, because every one of us has a dream but maybe he have some difficulty to make this dream true, so guiding them to the right path will make it easy for them, and I can help some poor people by giving them some money to start a new life and to find a work, to build a house, to have a better food, to make them go to school, but not always should give them money, we should make them work and make a better life for themselves by their own work, and there’s  a wonderful saying: don’t give me a fish, but teach me how to fish!
